Roof: A Unique LED Luminaire for Intimate Interiors

Creating a Shelter of Light for Communication and Connection

Roof is a LED luminaire designed by Hafize Beysimoglu that aims to increase intimacy during conversations. Inspired by natural light sources, architecture, and the need for human connection, Roof creates a unique space with its concave form and homogenous light output.

Roof is not just a lighting fixture; it is a connective product that brings people together. Whether it's a cozy dinner, a productive meeting, or simply adding a touch of fun to interior living, Roof serves as a shelter of light, isolating individuals from their surroundings and allowing them to focus on the table and communication.

What sets Roof apart from other luminaires is its concave form, which enhances the emotional aspect of the design. By considering the importance of increasing intimacy in communication, Roof creates a sense of unity and sincerity among people.

The design of Roof is simple, eco-friendly, and modular. It can be mounted in a row with an up and down system, creating an impressive texture of direct and indirect light. The wooden texture not only amplifies the philosophy of the product but also represents the ecological side of LED technology. With its physical and simple mounting details, Roof is easily maintainable and sustainable.

In terms of technology, Roof utilizes a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) LED technology for illumination. It is powered by a high-efficiency constant voltage driver. The heat output of the LEDs is conducted through a powder-coated metal sheet, ensuring a longer lifetime for the LEDs. The wooden structure provides a space between the light source and the PC sheet, resulting in a homogeneous light output. The PC sheet is slid among the slots inside the wooden structure, taking the form of the concave without the need for molding.

Roof comes in two sizes, with lengths of 1150mm and 1800mm. It can be used as a pendant or surface-mounted luminaire, offering versatility in various interior spaces.

The project started in February 2014 in Turkey and is currently in the prototyping and testing phase. The challenge for the designer was to create a luminaire that would strengthen communication between people through form, light, and material choices, while also considering the feasibility of the product for the market. Simple assembly and production processes were major concerns.

Roof has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2014. This prestigious award is bestowed upon outstanding designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

Roof, with its unique form, homogenous light output, and focus on human connection, is a testament to the power of design in creating intimate and meaningful spaces.
